Poppers 101: Usage, Effects, & Safety

This article contains info about popper(usage) and some general tips I would like to share with you. Feel free to comment or add some tips of your own.

What Are Poppers?

Poppers nitrite is an inhalant, it belongs to a class/group of chemical compounds known as alkyl nitrites, which also includes Amyl (=Pentyl), (Iso)Butyl, and (Iso)Propyl nitrite or a blend. The liquids get gaseous, aka “the fumes” or “the vapours”, at room temperature and build up inside the bottle.

Before using let the bottle get at room temperature so the moisture won’t condense on the bottle top at the risk of contaminating the contents in the bottle. Also don’t let saliva or lube get in contact with the bottle because this can speed up the breakdown as well. The chemicals are sensitive to moisture, warmth, oxygen and light. Preferably you would like to store them standing upright in a dark/cold spot and in an airtight container.

The liquid is clear/yellowish in colour and when it’s fresh it smells fruity and when stale its smells like some dirty old socks.

Poppers are also classified as a vasodilator. Vasodilators are medicines that cause the blood vessels in the body to dilate and the involuntary smooth muscles to relax.

How Are Poppers Generally Used?

Medical use

Alkyl nitrite is used medically in some cardiac procedures, including treatment for cyanide poisoning, as well as for angina.

Note: Make sure to read up on poppers before you start using them. You can find enough good quality sources on the internet. Some people are unaware of how poppers should be used and incorrect use can be fatal. Alkyl nitrite liquid should not be ingested i.e. do not swallow, as it is a highly poisonous substance that can lead to a dramatic drop in blood pressure. It is a powerful irritant that can lead to burns to the face, skin and eyes. Don’t go too hard, and do not mix the drug with anything that’s going to exacerbate its effects. The impact/effects of poppers can be different per user.

Recreational use

It is used to enhance sexual experience or to experience a general sense of pleasure/euphoria. The effects are generally instantly felt or within 10-15 seconds of taking the drug, and lasts for around 2-3 minutes. As a first user just start easy so you won’t get overwhelmed by the experience/rush.

What Am I Huffing/Sniffing?

First of all, make sure you know what you are huffing (this can be more difficult than you think). Sometimes the labels don’t give the exact contents of your poppers. A good friend of mine “Tony” informed me about an article that was published online just eight days ago by the government of Australia (https://www.tga.gov.au/testing-alkyl-nitrite-poppers).

If the site, you are buying the poppers from, is not showing the contents you can try calling them and ask them what the content is of the bottle you would like to buy. The content of the “same” bottle can be different per store/country. You can also ask fellow local popperbators about their experiences of a brand/content they prefer. Personally I stick to my favourite content and not to a specific brand.

Also try to keep up with the developments in the poppers market. Every now and then new articles are published about health, usage, etc. Try to compare multiple different sources if you are going to investigate some facts about poppers.

Before you start huffing let the bottle get at room temperature so the vapours can build up in the bottle for a better and faster impact. Personally I like to put the bottle in my armpits to warm up. When the bottle feels warm I am ready to enjoy the fumes. Some people put the bottle in warm water. If you try this make sure the top is sealed air tight (put it against you ear and make sure you don’t hear air travel) and preferable the bottle goes in up until the neck of the bottle.

Methods Of Usage?

There are lots of ways you can sniff, some examples are:

  • Mouth And Nose Huff – It’s the most used way of huffing. Make sure to clean the mouth/neck of the bottle before you start huffing.
  • Sock Huff (Mouth Or Nose) – Poor some of the liquid on the sock roll up so the liquid won’t get in contact with you skin and put it under your nose or in your mouth and inhale. If you put it in your mouth you can also grab a bottle or two and hold it under your nose for an extra rush, but don’t push it.
  • Water Bottle/Plastic Bag Huff – Grab a cotton ball, drop some of the liquid on it, and put it in a bag/bottle. Close the bottle and let the vapours build up. Start huffing.
  • Masks Huff (Painters ask, Gas mask, Medical mask) – Make sure not  soak the mask/filter because the concentration may be too strong and can be a bit risky. This method can get you high real fast.

Try different type of poppers and styles of huffing to find out what works best for you. Keep in mind it’s a combination of the quality of the poppers, HOW, HOW MUCH and HOW DEEP you sniff along with the (controlled) breathing techniques that really counts.

Feel free to try some of the following methods I use:

  • Slow Huffing – huff very slow and also releasing very slow and mainly focussing on the pleasure of your poppers. This works best with someone who also is slow huffing. This is a very relaxing method but takes some more time.
  • Deep Huffing – Exhale all the air and try to go as deep as possible. Hold it as long as you can and exhale slowly. Personally I like to double barrel when I huff deep. This can be intense. If you are experienced you can try this with fresh/new popper else use already opened ones.
  • Maxed Out Huffing – Sometimes I like to huff as much as possible without releasing until I can’t push out more huffs. Then I hold it for as long as feels good and then release very slowly and will repeat this multiple times. This can be intense. If you are experienced you can try this with fresh/new popper else use already opened ones.
  • Hold And Release – what also works well is huffing deep or normal and hold it as long as possible, then release up to 60% to 80% air and huff again while holding the 20%. You can mix this up and find a balance that works for you. This can be intense. If you are experienced you can try this with fresh/new popper else use already opened ones.

People have their own way of enjoying popper. Some focus mainly on huffing (from fast and deep to slow and very long huffs), others focus both on the penis and the huffing, some focus on the (brotherhood)connection. You can find some fellow popperbators/groups on (Skype, Batorworld.com, Popperbate.com, reddit(r/popperpigs)).

Effects Of Poppers?

The use of any drug always carries some risk. It’s important to be careful when taking any type of drug.

Poppers will affect everyone differently, based on:

  • Size, weight and health
  • Whether the person is used to taking it
  • Whether other drugs are taken around the same time
  • The amount taken
  • The strength of the drug
  • Amount of fresh air breathed while inhaling
  • Amount of physical activity before and after inhaling

Short-term effects

The effects of poppers include:

  • Initial ‘rush’ of euphoria
  • Flushing of the face
  • Increased heart rate
  • Warming sensations
  • Feelings of excitement
  • Relaxation of involuntary muscles, especially the anal.
  • Psychological effects include increased sensual awareness, visual distortions, lowered inhibitions and impaired judgement
  • Headaches are common once the ‘high’ passes.

Long-term effects

The level of harm from the long term use of poppers is generally low, the relative harmfulness of poppers places them among the less harmful of recreational drugs.

Isopropyl nitrite poppers may be a cause of maculopathy(eye damage). Some studies have concluded that there may be increased risk for at least temporary retinal damage with habitual popper use in certain users. There have also been reports about vision loss. Also some of the long term effects can range from mild allergic reactions to potentially life threatening methemoglobinemia – a blood disorder that can lead to inadequate oxygen supply to body tissue.

Frequent use can also cause a rash to form around the mouth, nose and eyes, or any skin that regularly comes into contact with the vapours. This can look like a skin irritation. Direct fluid contact with skin can cause burns and should be avoided.

If you are experiencing skin irritation use a moisturizer (before) and after you are done huffing. This also makes sure your skin doesn’t dry out. After you are done huffing wash your face, hands, and arms (if you wipe the bottle with it).

Keep a bottle of water beside you and a piece of cloth/towel to wipe the bottle with, and make sure you are in a room with enough fresh air.

People who are anaemic, have high blood pressure, or increased pressure within the skull (head injury or brain haemorrhage) should avoid using poppers as this can increase the risk of harmful effects. There is also a risk of fluid pressure build-up within the eye, and for people who have underlying glaucoma, this risk is further increased.

Using Poppers With Other Drugs?

The effects of using poppers with other drugs can be unpredictable and dangerous, and could include:

  • Poppers + Viagra: A high risk that the person will lose consciousness due to a sudden and extreme drop in blood pressure.
  • Poppers + Amphetamine: Increased strain on the heart

Withdrawal

Regular use of poppers does not result in dependence. People who use it regularly will not experience withdrawal symptoms, however it may take a few days for their body to get used to not having the drug in their system.

It’s good to sometimes to take a break from poppers because it drags you in very deep and you may find yourself huffing at work in the toilet, on the train, or even outside while you are walking ?.

Thank you!

  1. Rarely commented on, but popper use carry some risks and discomfort for guys with asthma, or other breathing difficulties.
I have a low level asthma that is triggered by secondary issues, eg, a cold, and in the past tobacco smoked environments.
I enjoy poppers on occasion, but invariably feel wheezy, with sore throat the following day.

    1. Same here… asthma and sinus issues are the reason I don’t do it anymore. After two surgeries on my sinuses I had to stop. I would get a sore throat for 1-2 days after use as well. Thank goodness i can vape and stoner bate. 🙂

  2. We use them a lot. It really does losen you up a little in order to take a big dick. We also use them on the dance floor to get a rush and then kiss.

  3. Excellent article and links. I especially like the focus on knowing what the exact chemical ingredients are, instead of taking the label / “brand” for granted.

  4. I noticed he said

“The effects of using poppers with other drugs can be unpredictable and dangerous, and could include:

Poppers + Viagra: A high risk that the person will lose consciousness due to a sudden and extreme drop in blood pressure.
Poppers + Amphetamine: Increased strain on the heart”

Are there any thoughts on bating with amphetamine? I’m assuming since it’s been mentioned that it’s not uncommon.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Experiences as a bate fuel?

  5. Hi BerlinBateBoy,

Poppers and (meth)amphetamines enhance the effects of each other. They both put extra pressure/stress on the body and your heart. The more/longer you take this combination the higher the risk and the pressure/stress on your heart.

Preferably you should not mix poppers with other drugs.

I don’t have any experience myself. Anyone else here who can add a comment/reply to BerlinBateBoy?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    arabpopperbator

  6. What the best way to store and keep poppers? I order them via the internet and when I get to the last bottle they aren’t as strong or have failed all the way.

    1. Hi David,

I have an article about it on my Twitter page @arabpopperbator.

      Enjoy the fumes!

      Best regards,
      arabpopperbator

  7. I like using poppers when I jerk off, but I don’t use them all the time; however, when I do buy a bottle I fly through it in one day. Afterwards, I notice some severe side effects: Pale, bluish looking skin, lips, and fingernails, shortness of breath, ringing in the ears, dizziness. These effects do pass but I’m concerned about long-term health effects.
    Thoughts? Should I be worried?

    1. You are showing signs of over use. You can use them in a less intense way and you won’t have as severe of side effects the next day or two. You shouldn’t be going through a bottle in a day. Dial back and enjoy.

  8. One time I was popperbating and spilled my bottle on the floor. I quickly wiped it all up with toilet paper and, not wanting it to go to waste, I held the dry side of the toilet paper up to my face and inhaled. I almost passed out and I immediately lay down so I wouldn’t hit my head if I passed out. I will never do that again!

  9. Everytime I look for info about poppers the risk of using it with viagra is highlighted, but I’ve met many guys that say they do it all the time and it’s all good. ¿Any thougts on this?

  10. Love poppers, but as I’ve got older I find they make me lose my erection. Is this a common feature of poppers?

    1. Losing erection is part of the game. It does happen to many people. The more you huff the harder it is to stay erect. Using a cockring can help to stay hard longer.

  11. There are just far too many suggestions here ! For a newcomer to Popper sniffing ( not me), I think they would end reading all these ‘suggestions’ confusing! The only positive information are warnings about if you have certain health problems, and some are useful, but in general, I found all the differing information boring and as I said, confusing to a ‘newcomer’ who has just started ‘sniffing’.

    1. Yes, I have plenty of thoughts about poppers and THC (cannabis), and they are all good thoughts.

Certainly, when you are high on pot and masturbating (always tremendous fun, although I don’t think I’m telling you anything new), poppers will add a special enhancement, bringing you to a whole other level.

I wouldn’t say that there any interactivity problems between the two substances in terms of risk, but the do seem to go quite nicely together. I’ve been a stonerbonergooner for years (and since you’re posing the question, I’m guessing that you are, too) and I think you’ll find that it will really enjoy it, especially if you’ve got the headphones on listening to hypnobate tracks.

I recommend it highly (no pun intended), but as with anything else, moderation in all things is the wise man’s approach. I’ve gotten lost in 420popperbate binges that have lasted for weeks, and it can put a serious dent in your productivity.

But that caution aside, have at it, bro.

  12. As an older guy, I gotta say that new users should be real careful about getting into poppers. I sure enjoyed using them back in the 80’s. Poppers not only enhance the physical pleasure of sex, but they cause your mind to be focused on nothing else but the sensations from your cock or ass. The ‘hangover’ from poppers, though, can make your mind fuzzy for a long time after the initial headache has worn off. Not good if there are other things in your life to focus on other than sex.

If you have high blood pressure, or are predisposed to it, then you probably need to think twice before using this drug. Also, the possible damage to your retina (new information to me) could lead to macular degeneration as you get older which could result in blindness.

Young bodies can take a lot of abuse and recover, but the long term damage may be accumulating and then make itself known when you get to be older. Don’t use up your life too quickly.

  13. I have searched everywhere but can’t find specifically the amount of times you poppers during sex. Is it just before the sex, or multiple times during sex?

    1. It’s to your liking really. Everyone is different. Before, during…whatever you like, we just don’t recommend over doing it even if you think you want more. Please play safe.

  14. Tried popping about two weeks ago and for me it’s too much. My drug of choice is still old fashioned marijuana. Looking forward to the day they make it legal in my state for recreational use.

  15. Over the last 6 years of using them heavily, I do notice that my short term memory is not as sharp. I do go through periods where I don’t use any at all and my memory gets better and better. I also noticed early on that my speech was slurred or that I would stutter. Most people couldn’t tell as I already have an accent due to being a polyglot. Lastly, I find that after so much heavy use, they don’t seem as fun as before.

  16. Any research on using a vitamin combination of E and C to minimize hypoxic effects? Or methylene blue oral? The M-Blue runs the risk of drug interactions, particularly with antidepressants and amphetamines.
