Ask The Batemaster: Is Cum Denial Really Safe?

“Just as important, or maybe more so, is the other side of the issue: the possible benefits of semen retention…”

QUESTION: You sometimes seem to advocate what you call “semen retention,” which you say may be even beyond regular edging into serious cum denial. I still hear some other people say it’s not safe for the prostate, it might even cause cancer! Can you be absolutely sure it’s safe?

RESPONSE: There is not a clear, scientifically verified answer to that, despite what some people say. This is an important subject for male masturbators to consider. Crossing a busy street, even at a crosswalk is not entirely safe. Statistics show that crossing a street is more dangerous than flying! This does not mean that you should never fly, or that you should never cross streets. What it does mean is that those actions are ones you ought to engage in fully aware and alert.

As for dangers to the prostate from choosing to ejaculate a lot less often (you probably don’t mean just a few days of edging, right?) the evidence is not so clear-cut as some folks seem to believe. When you look at the studies on prostate health and ejaculation you see that the sample in the study groups are not big enough for any broad or general conclusions.

Just as important, or maybe more so, is the other side of the issue: the possible benefits of semen retention have been studied far less—in truth, hardly at all. Or at least in terms of science and medicine, this has not really been studied to my knowledge. However, several thousand years of ancient Chinese Taoist teaching and experience does promote the belief that to ejaculate far less often than many men seem to these days, may actually prove beneficial.

Though the ancient Chinese practice of sexual cultivation, which means erotic stimulation without ejaculating very often, has not been seriously studied, we do know plenty about the benefits of masturbation. Masturbation activates your entire endocrine system, switching on organs such as the thymus, the adrenals, and the testicles, and these communicate with your brain so that your body releases beneficial brain chemicals and hormones.

When you ejaculate, you experience a burst of orgasmic pleasure that includes the release of oxytocin, a hormone associates with bliss, emotional reward, and social ease, and in most cases this internal chemistry quickly begins to break down. You soon return to default.

I don’t use the term “cum denial,” as it seems somewhat negative. I prefer to affirm and encourage men to explore the possible benefits of retaining semen for longer periods. The “endogenous,” or “inner body” benefits I described above may be prolonged, preserved and even maintained along with keeping your semen inside you more of the time, while you ejaculate less often. This does not mean giving up orgasm, but learning to have dry orgasms, something I often coach men to learn. Also, along that famous “edge” you may experience prolonged orgasmic states.

Evidence that frequent ejaculation is beneficial, is sketchy and not convincing. More likely, what causes prostate problems is neglect, “if you don’t use it you lose it,” has a lot of truth to it. In my own experience and that of many men I know, the benefits of semen retention seem clear. Whether you come often or not, to enjoy plenty of erotic pleasure is healthy.

A note from The Batemaster: I’m honored that the guys at Bateworld have asked me to respond to some questions from male masturbators around the world every week.

Always check with your doctor about any issues you might be experiencing with your sexual organs. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important. This article’s purpose is to inform and entertain readers and is not a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

How Bruce P. Grether became the Batemaster

Among his earliest memories, Bruce recalls seeing an adult man’s penis swing about anchored in a nest of curly brown hairs when the man was changing clothes. That penis fascinated him and he somehow knew it was of major importance. He also remembers how good it felt to slide down a stairway banister or to climb a tree with pressure between his legs sending delicious sensations all through his body.

At an early age, he played doctor with another boy his age, and the frottage he enjoyed as they rubbed their penises together made him feel One with All Things.

He was older, maybe 9 or 10 years when he figured out how to actually masturbate while taking a shower. Immediately Bruce became a fan of self-pleasure, though, with puberty, he became extremely shy about his body being seen. Still, when his pubic hair sprouted and his penis grew bigger, it astonished him how incredible the sensations could feel with adult genitalia.

All through his 20s and 30s Bruce loved masturbating and did it often. Something kept tell him though, that there could be more to it. None of the books he read about Tantra and Taoist erotic cultivation provided simple how-to instructions. Finally, in his early 40s, he came upon Joseph Kramer’s video about male genital massage: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Having no playmates to try this with, he tried it on himself. In the process, he discovered what he soon named “Mindful Masturbation.” For 6 weeks he masturbated for hours every day, and did not ejaculate once! This was the Penis Paradise he had been looking for since his adventures playing doctor as a young boy. He was changed forever and lost most of his shyness and insecurities.

Bruce began to listen deeply to whatever his penis told him. This way he learned more and more about male masturbation, the penis, and he studied human sexuality. Soon he was hired to write professionally for the sex education site JackinWorld (dot) com, which he did for some years under the name “Bruce McFarland.”

Since then, his erotic activism is more radical and he uses his actual given name: Bruce P. Grether, AKA the Batemaster. He has hosted workshops and now does online masturbation coaching. In 2012 his best-selling book THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN PHALLUS was published and with his handsome young friend Blue Tyger he created the Erotic Engineering site to explore advanced male self-pleasure practices.

Bruce considers himself a Missionary of the Male Mysteries and his work continues.

  1. 1. After a high PSA test a decade or so ago I had a series of annual prostate biopsies from urologist at the Harvard Medical School. Eventually he said that there were some wonky cells in my prostate, typical for my age (60’s) but in his experience my particular wonky cells didn’t lead to cancer. Significant to this discussion was that he didn’t suggest I jack off a lot. ( Eventually I figured out that the high PSA was probably the result of being vigorously fucked the night before the blood draw – my prostate must have taken a battering. A word to the wise about timing PSA tests!)

    2. I started learning about the practice of semen retention in Body Electric workshops 30 years ago and my frequency of ejaculation has declined as I age. Now at 77, I ejaculate about once every 3 weeks. In between ejaculations I have 1000+ dry orgasms – using the techniques learned from our esteemed Batemaster. I’m convinced that semen retention is key to keeping me healthy, happy, and horny – who wouldn’t be with all that healing energy circulating your body?

    1. What a wonderful and valuable response to the column, Brother! Something you mention is also significant when you mention at the end the “healing ENERGY” (my emphasis) circulating your body. To retain your semen is not only a physical action, but a choice, and this has a strong influence on how you feel within your body. The inner chemistry of brain chemicals and hormones is different from when you evacuate often, and feels fantastic. Also, feeling “ready to play” at almost any time is a gift! Peace, Bruce

  2. I have been entertaining thoughts of ejaculating after a few weeks’ semen retention. After reading our wise Batemaster and the answer by Fullmoonma, I have felt encouraged to go on enjoying this heightened state of sexuality and the joy and added benefits that come with it. Also, it has encouraged me to keep exploring dry orgasm techniques. So I’ll stay well away from ejaculation for a bit longer!

  3. I have not ejaculated for over a month now and feel awsome. I feel more alert.
I love to edge as much as possible and have been getting a lot more dry orgasms
wich is good because dry orgasms seem to last longer then just regular orgasmic ejaculation.

  4. I’ve been living in orgasm denial for 18 months. for me, masturbation is much more pleasant and more important than the orgasm process. My sperm can leak and even sometimes ruined orgasm to a lesser extent, but no orgasms. I am happy to be able to maintain energy constantly. I am glad that I am always masturbating.

  5. I don’t like the terms Orgasm Denial or Cum Denial…it just seems shaming or something.
I’ve been edging for most of my adult life and find it to be great for strengthening and tempering my energy in life.
From my mid 20’s through early 40’s I practiced a lot of “injaculation” which is where you press/hold your perineum (space between balls and anus) while orgasming…this redirects the cum (into the bladder?), holding it inside your body, rather than ejaculation…I found it is quite similar to edging and building heath & vitality in your body. After doing for awhile, I’m able to injaculate without pressing the perineum, just simply doing an internal contraction (like a kegel exercise).

  6. I would like to experience dry orgasms while edging, but I cherish my shooting skills and copious amounts of ejaculate. How do I reconcile the two.
