Ask The Batemaster: Neuroplasticity and Masturbation

Neuroplastictity---ATBM---TBB

Neuroplasticity makes it possible to weave new nerve pathways into your nervous system and brain.

QUESTION:

You sometimes use long, fancy words, Bruce! Can you tell me in simple, clear terms what “neuroplasticity” really means? How is it related to masturbation? Or is it really?

RESPONSE:

Yes, I may have discussed “neuroplasticity” here before. But this is an important concept, and worth getting clear about. Until the last few decades, modern science and medicine held the view that damage to the brain and nervous system was pretty much permanent and that healing physical injuries to nerves and brain cells was a severely limited proposition.

More recently, it has been discovered that with stimulation through activity and even focused awareness, it is possible to weave new nerve pathways into your nervous system and brain. You have the capacity to encourage your nerves to re-wire “around” an injury or a region of diminished or limited function.

This process also operates beyond repairing damage to physical injuries, into enhancing how your brain and mind function. The connection with mindfulness was discovered when therapists sought a more human alternative to “aversion therapies” for conditions such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders and phobic fears. Aversion therapies, which often forced a patient to confront their fears, also forced them to relive the traumas.

Mindfulness simply means paying full attention, being truly present in the moment, being fully present in your body, here and now. So, when mindful practice was applied to deal with phobias and OCD, by avoiding distraction, paying full, close attention to what you are doing, and consciously confirming this to yourself, therapies became more effective and less traumatic. Studies confirmed that mindfulness wires in new nerve pathways, as you train yourself with new behavioral patterns that are more functional.

When you apply mindfulness to masturbation, being fully present in your body, paying close attention to what you actually do and feel, you can retrain yourself to use breathing, diversity of stroking patterns and positions, to spread sensations throughout your entire body. You may discover new levels of pure penis pleasure while you masturbate. It’s easier to prolong your sessions and you can constantly increase your capacities for pure penis pleasure.

Personally, I have practiced what I call Mindful Masturbation now for over twenty-six years. I can testify that I have experienced far more pleasure in this time than in my entire life before 1995. Further, each day it feels better and better, and I experience more pleasure now than ever before. I am constantly training my penis.

Daily, neuroplasticity is at work in my body, my brain, and my penis!

A note from The Batemaster: I’m honored that the guys at BateWorld have asked me to respond to some questions from male masturbators around the world every week.

How Bruce P. Grether became the Batemaster

Among his earliest memories, Bruce recalls seeing an adult man’s penis swing about anchored in a nest of curly brown hairs when the man was changing clothes. That penis fascinated him and he somehow knew it was of major importance. He also remembers how good it felt to slide down a stairway banister or to climb a tree with pressure between his legs sending delicious sensations all through his body.

At an early age, he played doctor with another boy his age, and the frottage he enjoyed as they rubbed their penises together made him feel One with All Things.

He was older, maybe 9 or 10 years when he figured out how to actually masturbate while taking a shower. Immediately Bruce became a fan of self-pleasure, though, with puberty, he became extremely shy about his body being seen. Still, when his pubic hair sprouted and his penis grew bigger, it astonished him how incredible the sensations could feel with adult genitalia.

All through his 20s and 30s Bruce loved masturbating and did it often. Something kept tell him though, that there could be more to it. None of the books he read about Tantra and Taoist erotic cultivation provided simple how-to instructions. Finally, in his early 40s, he came upon Joseph Kramer’s video about male genital massage: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Having no playmates to try this with, he tried it on himself. In the process, he discovered what he soon named “Mindful Masturbation.” For 6 weeks he masturbated for hours every day, and did not ejaculate once! This was the Penis Paradise he had been looking for since his adventures playing doctor as a young boy. He was changed forever and lost most of his shyness and insecurities.

Bruce began to listen deeply to whatever his penis told him. This way he learned more and more about male masturbation, the penis, and he studied human sexuality. Soon he was hired to write professionally for the sex education site JackinWorld (dot) com, which he did for some years under the name “Bruce McFarland.”

Since then, his erotic activism is more radical and he uses his actual given name: Bruce P. Grether, AKA the Batemaster. He has hosted workshops and now does online masturbation coaching. In 2012 his best-selling book THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN PHALLUS was published and with his handsome young friend Blue Tyger he created the Erotic Engineering site to explore advanced male self-pleasure practices.

Bruce considers himself a Missionary of the Male Mysteries and his work continues.

  1. I can attest to this. Many of our brothers here on BW related how their nipples excited them and how their nipples were hardwired to their cocks. I explored this phenom. At that time my nipples were the size of little BBs and feeling them and rubbing them did nothing for me. Several months ago I read Bruce’s blog about neuroplasticity and made a very conscious effort to concentrate and try to train my nipples. I must say that this method was successful and really worked for me. My nipples are now the size of peas and when I touch them my cock immediately responds. Stimulating my nipples has become an integral part of my masturbation foreplay.

I wrote a blog about this process in great detail. The blog can be found on my profile page titled, “Nipples, my new sex toys.” Bate on, brothers.

    1. Thank you @TheBatemaster for teaching me how important the connection between the mind and body is. The more and more I intentionally spend time in bate I always thought it was about the body—There’s something about this process that is beautiful and I’m honored to have been introduced to bating (It was a year and half before someone ever mentioned BW)—just makes me realize how much honor it is to be able to take learn about the science and the artful process and dedication and ritual that creates the experience and community that I see here. Real talk, thank you all for sharing your bate and community and art. I’ve felt that community and experienced the journey of connection with men that happens when men can just be men and bate—no other experience in the world like it and happy to be here with you

    2. That’s incredible! I have a friend whose nipples have gained sensitivity as well! At first he was annoyed by nipple attention, then he caved and let guys play with them as it turned him on how turned on they were by it, now his nipples are connected to his cock just like mine are.
