Bush Lover - The Bator Blog

Grooming of the male body seems to move in cycles of various fashions.

QUESTION:

I love to see how hairy some guys’ bodies are, which has always turned me on! Especially a nice pubic bush—I mean, yum! But when I see that a guy has shaved it off, it’s an instant turn-off and I totally lose interest. It seems so unnatural! Why do some guys do that to what Nature gave them?

RESPONSE:

Grooming of the male body seems to move in cycles of various fashions. However, in today’s world it seems like all sorts of fashions, which used to seem mutually exclusive, can co-exist. Aside from the ancient Egyptians, many of whom shaved their entire bodies on a regular basis, I’m not aware of any major trend to remove pubic hair until the second half of the last century.

During the 1970s, at least according to what we see in gay porn, the trend was towards natural body hair. Facial hair, chest hair, and pubic hair, all seem to have been in favor and almost universally kept quite natural. Men appearing in the magazines and early videos of those days also sported more varied and natural physiques.

Grooming of the male body seems to move in cycles of various fashions. However, in today’s world it seems like all sorts of fashions, which used to seem mutually exclusive, can co-exist.

Then, it seems that during the ’80s and ’90s a trend towards more uniform gym-cultivated bodies and less body hair became fashionable. Some observers interpret this as a reaction against the “naturalistic” gay porn models of the pre-HIV era and the “wasting syndrome” during the early years of the epidemic. The shift may also reflect the more conservative backlash after the tail end of the 1960s dwindled, with the rise of Baby Boomers into more affluent and more responsible levels of prominence. Whatever the reasons, more and more men lost the facial hair and even shaved or waxed their chests. More men aimed for gym-sculpted physiques.

The mid-to-late 1990s and the early aughts, after the turn of the millennium ushered in a trend to severely trim or entirely shave off pubic bushes. Some men came to appreciate shaved balls, while maintaining some pubes, while others seemed determined to lose all “hair down there.” Many men apparently decided that eliminating the bush would make their penis appear larger, though that’s probably only part of the story. In regions such as Europe, this fashion of shaving the crotch completely became more common. In parts of the Middle East and Pakistan and India many men seem to have decided somewhere along the way that it was “neater” and perhaps even cooler in truly hot climates, to remove it all.

These days we see a wide variety of trends that co-exist. Since around 2010, facial hair has returned into widespread vogue, first with beards, and now we witness the rebirth of the classical mustache! Along with that swing of the pendulum, a lot more men seem to favor the naturally hairy chest and the return of the full natural bush! Recently, bushy, and longer beards also seem more popular.

Really this is just a matter of choice. Fashions always tend to wax and wane. Personally, I’ve always felt you cannot do much to improve upon Nature itself. But that’s another entire discussion: “What does the term ‘natural’ really mean?”

Everyone has specific turn-ons, and things that turn us off. This is okay, so long as we try not to judge anyone’s worth according to something as fleeting and relatively superficial as a fashion!

How Bruce P. Grether became the Batemaster

Among his earliest memories, Bruce recalls seeing an adult man’s penis swing about anchored in a nest of curly brown hairs when the man was changing clothes. That penis fascinated him and he somehow knew it was of major importance. He also remembers how good it felt to slide down a stairway banister or to climb a tree with pressure between his legs sending delicious sensations all through his body.

At an early age, he played doctor with another boy his age, and the frottage he enjoyed as they rubbed their penises together made him feel One with All Things.

He was older, maybe 9 or 10 years when he figured out how to actually masturbate while taking a shower. Immediately Bruce became a fan of self-pleasure, though, with puberty, he became extremely shy about his body being seen. Still, when his pubic hair sprouted and his penis grew bigger, it astonished him how incredible the sensations could feel with adult genitalia.

All through his 20s and 30s Bruce loved masturbating and did it often. Something kept tell him though, that there could be more to it. None of the books he read about Tantra and Taoist erotic cultivation provided simple how-to instructions. Finally, in his early 40s, he came upon Joseph Kramer’s video about male genital massage: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Having no playmates to try this with, he tried it on himself. In the process, he discovered what he soon named “Mindful Masturbation.” For 6 weeks he masturbated for hours every day, and did not ejaculate once! This was the Penis Paradise he had been looking for since his adventures playing doctor as a young boy. He was changed forever and lost most of his shyness and insecurities.

Bruce began to listen deeply to whatever his penis told him. This way he learned more and more about male masturbation, the penis, and he studied human sexuality. Soon he was hired to write professionally for the sex education site JackinWorld (dot) com, which he did for some years under the name “Bruce McFarland.”

Since then, his erotic activism is more radical and he uses his actual given name: Bruce P. Grether, AKA the Batemaster. He has hosted workshops and now does online masturbation coaching. In 2012 his best-selling book THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN PHALLUS was published and with his handsome young friend Blue Tyger he created the Erotic Engineering site to explore advanced male self-pleasure practices.

Bruce considers himself a Missionary of the Male Mysteries and his work continues.

  1. I myself has shaved my hair off ,why I like the way it looks, feels, and it àlot easer to clean up . The smooth feeling ya feel when I’m masturbating is so awesome .
    So I don’t think it s a bad thing.
There do and do’nts to everything.look at it like thats there way , you have yours no body should be ju

  2. Fully bushed here, it’s a personal choice for sure. Perhaps it’s a generational thing, guys/gals my age tend to have fully bushed pubic mounds. I like the natural look. And its a frequent poll question at BW, to be bushed or not to be.

  3. Hey Bruce the Batemaster, I am fully bushy genetically and feel fortunate. Tried shaving my balls and trimming but my hair is so prickly I can’t stand it. Bushy is comfortable, and my scrotum doesn’t stick to my legs. Hairiness is there for a reason and it also captures wonderful pheromones!
However I have often wondered about the role of women in this, from sexual liberation onwards, it seems men are not free to be. Women love smooth bodies, cocks…. But what about stubble chest and tittie rash….maybe worse still, labia rash. And many men will do what their women want to get more sex.
Personally I think the look is emasculating and makes most men look prepubescent, a demographic that doesn’t interest me sexually. Pubic hair and hairy bodies frame everything and give a bit of a wow factor.

  4. I couldn’t agree more. Men are supposed to have pubic hair, it’s an indication that they are men and not boys. As a further bonus, the hair traps their male-scent.
