Ask The Batemaster: Why Consider Semen Retention?

When you retain your semen, you may enjoy a lot more pleasure overall. You are ready for erotic play at any moment.

QUESTION: You sometimes talk about retaining semen, and in your videos you hardly ever ejaculate. I’m only in my 30s, but I’d much prefer never to ejaculate again, since I learned how, mainly from you. It feels so great to keep my semen inside me! Can you explain the difference for more of the BW guys?

RESPONSE: I’m not opposed to ejaculation. After all, what guy doesn’t love the intense orgasm with ejaculation? Still, I also suggest that you really have to explore the option of retaining your semen, to discover even higher erotic states than you can reach if you ejaculate every time you masturbate, or fairly often. This really goes beyond what most guys call “edging.”

Some men can’t imagine anything that feels better than a full-blown ejaculatory orgasm, but this really does miss some of the possibilities worth exploring if you want to become a really great masturbator. An important fact: orgasm and ejaculation are not one and the same thing! It’s easy to mistake them for being identical, because when a young man in puberty first ejaculates semen, it’s almost always accompanied by an intense orgasm.

However, when you really explore the possibilities, you discover that you can experience ejaculation sometimes and not have a full orgasm, just a weaker burst of pleasure; you can also experience intense orgasms without ejaculation. The latter possibility also comes with the extra benefit of not losing your erection. Then there’s Also the option top continue to masturbate to more “dry orgasms,” perhaps as many as you want!

Most times, when you have an ejaculatory orgasm, that’s the end of your pleasure, at least for a while. When you practice “edging,” or seriously retain your semen, you can experience a lot more pleasure, possibly many orgasms or even prolonged orgasmic states. There is nothing terribly difficult or esoteric about retaining your semen. Still, it takes dedicated practice to learn to avoid ejaculating so often, and to reward yourself with even more pleasure than you ever felt before. Your body adjusts to re-absorb the sperm cells generated in your balls, and the other semen components generated inside your body closer to the base of your penis.

If you don’t try prolonged edging or semen retention, you may never know what you are missing, and if you do, you tend to get energized but also feel more peaceful and confident.

When you retain your semen, you may enjoy a lot more pleasure overall. You are ready for erotic play at any moment. This works well when you learn to stay relaxed during arousal: breathe deeply, slow down, pay full attention to what you do and feel, and allow the pleasure to fill your entire body, not just remain in your genitals.

This is where male masturbation really becomes a fine art—your enjoyment is its own reward!

A note from The Batemaster: I’m honored that the guys at Bateworld have asked me to respond to some questions from male masturbators around the world every week.

How Bruce P. Grether became the Batemaster

Among his earliest memories, Bruce recalls seeing an adult man’s penis swing about anchored in a nest of curly brown hairs when the man was changing clothes. That penis fascinated him and he somehow knew it was of major importance. He also remembers how good it felt to slide down a stairway banister or to climb a tree with pressure between his legs sending delicious sensations all through his body.

At an early age, he played doctor with another boy his age, and the frottage he enjoyed as they rubbed their penises together made him feel One with All Things.

He was older, maybe 9 or 10 years when he figured out how to actually masturbate while taking a shower. Immediately Bruce became a fan of self-pleasure, though, with puberty, he became extremely shy about his body being seen. Still, when his pubic hair sprouted and his penis grew bigger, it astonished him how incredible the sensations could feel with adult genitalia.

All through his 20s and 30s Bruce loved masturbating and did it often. Something kept tell him though, that there could be more to it. None of the books he read about Tantra and Taoist erotic cultivation provided simple how-to instructions. Finally, in his early 40s, he came upon Joseph Kramer’s video about male genital massage: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Having no playmates to try this with, he tried it on himself. In the process, he discovered what he soon named “Mindful Masturbation.” For 6 weeks he masturbated for hours every day, and did not ejaculate once! This was the Penis Paradise he had been looking for since his adventures playing doctor as a young boy. He was changed forever and lost most of his shyness and insecurities.

Bruce began to listen deeply to whatever his penis told him. This way he learned more and more about male masturbation, the penis, and he studied human sexuality. Soon he was hired to write professionally for the sex education site JackinWorld (dot) com, which he did for some years under the name “Bruce McFarland.”

Since then, his erotic activism is more radical and he uses his actual given name: Bruce P. Grether, AKA the Batemaster. He has hosted workshops and now does online masturbation coaching. In 2012 his best-selling book THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN PHALLUS was published and with his handsome young friend Blue Tyger he created the Erotic Engineering site to explore advanced male self-pleasure practices.

Bruce considers himself a Missionary of the Male Mysteries and his work continues.

  1. That’s the beauty of masturbation, there’s so many avenues to explore once you’ve got the basic skill set figured out for masturbating. And we owe it to ourselves to give different techniques a try. Perhaps start a list of things you’d like to try and then make an appointment with yourself for “techniques day.” It’s easy enough to explore and research the details for various techniques including retention. Spend some time and practice.

    1. Yes, Brother apalmer5: Excellent ideas in your comment! Breaking habits, especially in masturbation, is crucial to discovering nuances you may have missed, a nd sometimes to major breakthroughs, into greater pleasure than you have ever experienced before. This has happened to me quite a few times in the 24 years I’ve been doing experiential re4search on the subject! — BPG

  2. I’ve been practicing 3 week semen retention for a decade or so, and starting doing multiple dry orgasms when Bruce’s “9 Golden keys” video became available half a dozen years ago. At my age, 76, this is essential to keep my body charged with erotic energy. Thanks Bruce!

    1. Dear Brother fullmoonma… As always, you are among the most dedicated and extraordinary masturbators I know of, and your epic journey of erotic self-discovery continues to inspire me. Most definitely, there is a seed of truth (pun fully intended!) in the Taoist teaching about the value of retaining semen longer and longer as our journeys around the solar center of our system increase in numbers. (In other words: come less often as we age, to feel more frisky and wise.) Not everything in the Taoist sexual teachings is anything I take literally, still there are many beneficial substances in semen, which strongly resembles spinal fluid, that can benefit your body to re-absorb rather than discard. Thanks as always. — BPG

  3. This is something I used to do completely unintentionally in the past, not even knowing I was edging or retaining my sperm. I just liked the feeling, the vibrancy and energy and constant excitement that came from being so close and charged up. But I haven’t done that in quite a while, and after reading this article a few weeks ago, I was pleasantly reminded and informed about the concept. Hence, I started masturbating more frequently but not ejaculating for the past couple weeks or more, and am thoroughly convinced it’s an important practice that I want and will engage in moving forward. Thank you so much for this enlightening article. I consider it a must read for all masturbators. Stay horny my friend.
