Ask The Batemaster: Prolonged Masturbation (AKA Edging)

There is no medical evidence that edging, or masturbating for prolonged intervals without ejaculation is harmful…

Ask The Batemaster LogoQUESTION: Is edging dangerous? I like to go several days without cumming and enjoy bating for an hour or more at a time. Is it unhealthy to build up cum without releasing it?

RESPONSE: Though I have discussed this subject before (check out Ask The Batemaster: Edging & Sexual Health), it is an important one. Many years ago, early in my male masturbation activism, I was hired to write columns for an educational site called JackinWorld (dot) com, which then served a good purpose. It’s still there and provides healthy sex education. However, it has none of the hot photos, videos, and chat that BW provides.

Using the name “Bruce McFarland” (before I began to proudly use my actual birth name) I wrote many columns for JW, and was well paid. But we had to follow certain guidelines for language and content, because the site is aimed at all ages from young boys to elderly men. Until about half way through my years there, I was never allowed to encourage edging, or to say you need not ejaculate every time you masturbate. At that time, long ago, it was believed you definitely should ejaculate every time you masturbate or have sex, in order to avoid health problems.

I am not a doctor and cannot give medical advice. Still, I study all these matters in depth, as well as having my own intense practice now of what is called semen retention. The early hysteria that not ejaculating would cause prostate cancer, or prostate problems is far from being proven. The evidence cited back then, is out-of-date, and no longer considered conclusive.

There is no medical evidence that edging, or masturbating for prolonged intervals without ejaculation is harmful, in fact there is not much medical or scientific evidence that I know of on this matter, at all. I wish there was! I’d love to see brain scans and long-term studies of serious edgers. At the same time, I know many men who choose not to ejaculate very often, in order to feel more erotically charged most of the time, to feel more energetic, and ready for erotic play at almost any time.

I am in this camp myself, and men who watch my videos are sometimes puzzled or disappointed that they so seldom see me ejaculate. I do ejaculate sometimes, but less and less often as I get older. But I do not masturbate less, on the contrary, though is comes and goes to some extent how much time I spend, I definitely enjoy some self-pleasure daily. Often I have many dry orgasms in a session. The key is to slow down and keep all your pelvic muscles relaxed.

In my opinion, you are more likely to cause health problems with the prostate by simply not enjoying enough erotic stimulation. Sometimes men just get too busy and distracted to masturbate or enjoy sex very often. When you do enjoy a lot of penis pleasure, but don’t ejaculate, be sure to relax in the afterglow. Your body does not mind at all re-absorbing any excess semen and its components that you have generated.

Edging is its own reward, as most men on Bateworld know. Keep refining your masturbation skills; enjoy ejaculation when you really feel the need, but edging can take you places no quickie session, or a frequent ejaculation habit can take you to.

That place quite close to the edge, but seldom over it is where I choose to live much of my own life, and I consider it Heaven on Earth.

How Bruce P. Grether became the Batemaster

Among his earliest memories, Bruce recalls seeing an adult man’s penis swing about anchored in a nest of curly brown hairs when the man was changing clothes. That penis fascinated him and he somehow knew it was of major importance. He also remembers how good it felt to slide down a stairway banister or to climb a tree with pressure between his legs sending delicious sensations all through his body.

At an early age, he played doctor with another boy his age, and the frottage he enjoyed as they rubbed their penises together made him feel One with All Things.

He was older, maybe 9 or 10 years when he figured out how to actually masturbate while taking a shower. Immediately Bruce became a fan of self-pleasure, though, with puberty, he became extremely shy about his body being seen. Still, when his pubic hair sprouted and his penis grew bigger, it astonished him how incredible the sensations could feel with adult genitalia.

All through his 20s and 30s Bruce loved masturbating and did it often. Something kept tell him though, that there could be more to it. None of the books he read about Tantra and Taoist erotic cultivation provided simple how-to instructions. Finally, in his early 40s, he came upon Joseph Kramer’s video about male genital massage: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Having no playmates to try this with, he tried it on himself. In the process, he discovered what he soon named “Mindful Masturbation.” For 6 weeks he masturbated for hours every day, and did not ejaculate once! This was the Penis Paradise he had been looking for since his adventures playing doctor as a young boy. He was changed forever and lost most of his shyness and insecurities.

Bruce began to listen deeply to whatever his penis told him. This way he learned more and more about male masturbation, the penis, and he studied human sexuality. Soon he was hired to write professionally for the sex education site JackinWorld (dot) com, which he did for some years under the name “Bruce McFarland.”

Since then, his erotic activism is more radical and he uses his actual given name: Bruce P. Grether, AKA the Batemaster. He has hosted workshops and now does online masturbation coaching. In 2012 his best-selling book THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN PHALLUS was published and with his handsome young friend Blue Tyger he created the Erotic Engineering site to explore advanced male self-pleasure practices.

Bruce considers himself a Missionary of the Male Mysteries and his work continues.

  1. The beauty of self-pleasuring… It can be done whichever way you enjoy it. I’ve chatted with a number of bators who prefer/enjoy not cumming. And with our curious sexual nature we might wonder gosh if I never cum maybe my pipes will clog up with backed up semen or something. I’m guessing by natures design – mother nature urges us the best she can to finish our deed down there – to sow our seeds. And many of us discover the amazing pleasures we can give ourselves getting on edge & then “riding it” for as long as we want. For me (and my needs) I always want and do cum. Well, daily actually. But then again the idea of dry orgasms is intriguing as well.

  2. I have found extreme pleasure in edging and not ejaculating.
However I like to keep things fresh and ejaculate every two or three times after edging….usually I edge for an hour or more sometimes 3 or 4 hours. ..just about every day.
I am retired now and am happy to have more time to enjoy my penis.

    1. That’s great! Every man needs to find out what works best for him. There’s certainly no formula, or dogma. I do know that many men will not discover the incredible high plateaus you can ascend to unless you learn to make ejaculation a choice, and try NOT ejaculating for some days, or even weeks, or even months… –

  3. I read all of Bruce’s articles i am glad that BW chose him to write “ask the batemaster”! I too and a practicing semen retainer who chooses to edge for long periods of time and NOT ejaculate! Thanks Bruce for the affirmation!

    1. Bruce is a valuable partner to BateWorld. We couldn’t be happier that he continues to volunteer his time and talent to this column!

    2. You are most welcome, Brother! I know who you are: among the most diligent semen retainers I know! Thanks for your kind words.

  4. I love watching big dick porn. I love jacking off watching big cock stretching tight pussy. I have a fairly big dong 8&3/4 in. But I’m talking monster cocks drilling pussy really makes my balls twitch, does this make me queer ?
