Ask The Batemaster: Can You Over Masturbate?

QUESTION: Can you over masturbate? Since I’ve been home all the time, I’ve increased my jacking off a lot and I always cum when I do. I think I’ve strained a nut as one is usually sore. I’ve tried decreasing my orgasms but I’m curious to know if too many orgasms are harmful?

RESPONSE: There is no simple answer to whether or not you can over masturbate. Giving yourself a lot of orgasms in itself is not harmful, though you may begin to enjoy them less, as they seem less special. If your obsession actually prevents you from doing other things you also want to do, then question it. You might be smart to cut back some on the time you spend masturbating, and therefore enjoy it more while you do it. Similarly, if you don’t orgasm quite so much, you might enjoy it more when you do.

The fact that you “always cum when I do” may also be something to work with. The practices of edging, or semen retention, which I consider a refinement beyond how many guys edge, may also increase your pleasure, while you masturbate, and also the rest of the time. To always cum is giving in to your predictable program. Your pleasure can increase when you break out of habits to try something new. One option is to learn to give yourself dry orgasms without ejaculation. You can certainly enjoy as many dry orgasms as you want without any drawbacks, but that’s another subject.

To choose not to ejaculate so often, perhaps not at all for a matter of days, or even a week or two, though you still masturbate daily, can keep you at a place of both feeling energized, and yet more serene and anchored by a kind of confidence and joy in living. To ejaculate really often may produce a bit more of a bumpy ride, or even a roller-coaster effect, as many guys feel a bit of a let-down or even mild depression after ejaculating.

You probably end up with a sore testicle because you have not relaxed the muscles in the pelvic region around your urogenital organs while you masturbate. Keep your pelvis relaxed and loose; use deep belly-breathing to enhance your masturbation practice. Massage your balls. Gently tug them down, push them up, roll and rub them carefully in your fingers during your masturbation sessions. If you choose not to ejaculate so often, some extra sensitivity in one or both testicles is quite common anyway.

I do encourage men to explore semen retention as a means to experience higher states of pleasure. This can also enhance the rest of your daily life while not actually stroking. Still, there is really nothing wrong with ejaculating fairly often. It’s your choice: just pay attention to how it makes you feel overall.

“Too many orgasms” may not harm you. However, because you describe them that way, maybe you should try cutting back on ejaculations, to enjoy your masturbation more. Consider the cliché: focus on the journey, not the destination. IT’s easy to get too goal oriented. Enjoy yourself all the way along.

A note from The Batemaster: I’m honored that the guys at Bateworld have asked me to respond to some questions from male masturbators around the world every week.

How Bruce P. Grether became the Batemaster

Among his earliest memories, Bruce recalls seeing an adult man’s penis swing about anchored in a nest of curly brown hairs when the man was changing clothes. That penis fascinated him and he somehow knew it was of major importance. He also remembers how good it felt to slide down a stairway banister or to climb a tree with pressure between his legs sending delicious sensations all through his body.

At an early age, he played doctor with another boy his age, and the frottage he enjoyed as they rubbed their penises together made him feel One with All Things.

He was older, maybe 9 or 10 years when he figured out how to actually masturbate while taking a shower. Immediately Bruce became a fan of self-pleasure, though, with puberty, he became extremely shy about his body being seen. Still, when his pubic hair sprouted and his penis grew bigger, it astonished him how incredible the sensations could feel with adult genitalia.

All through his 20s and 30s Bruce loved masturbating and did it often. Something kept tell him though, that there could be more to it. None of the books he read about Tantra and Taoist erotic cultivation provided simple how-to instructions. Finally, in his early 40s, he came upon Joseph Kramer’s video about male genital massage: FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Having no playmates to try this with, he tried it on himself. In the process, he discovered what he soon named “Mindful Masturbation.” For 6 weeks he masturbated for hours every day, and did not ejaculate once! This was the Penis Paradise he had been looking for since his adventures playing doctor as a young boy. He was changed forever and lost most of his shyness and insecurities.

Bruce began to listen deeply to whatever his penis told him. This way he learned more and more about male masturbation, the penis, and he studied human sexuality. Soon he was hired to write professionally for the sex education site JackinWorld (dot) com, which he did for some years under the name “Bruce McFarland.”

Since then, his erotic activism is more radical and he uses his actual given name: Bruce P. Grether, AKA the Batemaster. He has hosted workshops and now does online masturbation coaching. In 2012 his best-selling book THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN PHALLUS was published and with his handsome young friend Blue Tyger he created the Erotic Engineering site to explore advanced male self-pleasure practices.

Bruce considers himself a Missionary of the Male Mysteries and his work continues.

  1. If the pain is only on one side (testicle) you might want to check into the possibility there may be an inguinal hernia going on.

    1. Good point about the hernia! In the case of a hernia, there is usually a swelling on that side of the groin also, but definitely something worth checking out, if it persists! — BPG

  2. You think you may have strained a nut.
I had the same feeling, it lasted for a while.
Got an ultrasound, turns out I have a varicose vein there.
It comes and goes, mostly goes.
If any soreness exists for any length of time, get it checked out.

    1. Yes, again, a good point if this persists. A medical opinion is always worthwhile is anything significant changes in the body and persists. Particularly discomfort, pain, or appearance that you cannot understand or account for. No reason to panic if it seems to accompany a lot of masturbatuon, in my opinion, but certainly if its; severe pain or persists, get a medical opinion. — BPG

  3. It sounds to me like his Cremaster muscles – which pull up, or elevate, the balls when we cum – may be causing balls to be squeezed too hard at the time of ejaculation. More ejaculations means more pulling up and squeezing – after a while it will cause thew ball(s) to ache.
Relaxing the pelvic muscles will certainly help a bit, but men (typically) do not have any control over the Cremasters, so GENTLY pulling down on the testes just before cumming may help relieve some of the pressure being placed on them.

  4. a study in 2019 showed that men 40 to 49 who ejaculaded more had a lower incidence of prostate cancer. those who ejaculated 21 or more times a month had the least incidence. purely anecdotally, am 80 yrs old and blow my load every evening after wacking my cock off and on all day long with many dry orgasms. if l don’t cum every day l am up pissing in the middle of the night more often. so for me it’s healthy and it sure is fun, love my cock.
    all the best, great blog…samislut

  5. I am a self-admitted 1% kind of avid masturbator. Never have been too worried about doing it too much, as I have been able to find plenty of time for my hobby and still take care of my obligations in life. Having said all that, given that we are now 6 months into COVID, and believing with all my heart that millions of men worldwide are masturbating more frequently than ever before, it appears the male body can tolerate a considerable amount of jacking off without physical harm….just my two cents….
